KT’s Journey of Becoming a Writer & an Instructor

I was 10 years old when I saw The King and I at a local dinner theater andI was mesmerized! While watching the show I thought, “I want do this, I want to write stories that make people feel this way.” At that moment, I knew I was meant to tell stories that would impact people. In college, I studied English Literature so I could learn the art of storytelling from the masters. I poured through the greatest literature and poetry of our time. After I graduated, I evolved even further in my pursuit of storytelling through my work with the TV show, America’s Most Wanted.

I felt the enormous importance of helping people to tell a very personal story in order to seek justice for their loved ones. This is where I learned the power of storytelling and how it can be used to make a difference. This experience prompted me to excel in my art. I moved to Los Angeles to become a filmmaker and screenwriter. I took a few classes at UCLA Extension and fell in love with the craft. I won two writing awards and got accepted to the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television Masters Program where I studied under the top screenwriters in Hollywood such as Lou Hunter, Richard Walter, and David Keopp, my mentor (Panic Room, Spiderman, Jurassic Park).

After graduating, I sold and optioned several scripts and wrote for a television show. While my career was going well, my personal life began to fall apart. A month before my movie “The Perfect Man” was released in theaters across the country, I walked away from Hollywood to concentrate on my health, work with a Life Coach, piece my life back together and find myself. A pivotal moment of healing began when I evaluated my life and told my own story.

As I cleaned up my life, I looked at my story, separated myself from the pain and began to break down my life as I would a script. Suddenly, I saw the power of my story and more importantly, I felt freed from it. Through this process, I discovered how much the act of telling my story had healed me.

Whenever I meet a stranger and introduce myself as screenwriter, they always respond, “I have a story…” They plead with me to write it for them or to help them. I believe that everyone has a unique voice, something to say and the ability to write a story.

THEY JUST DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO IT!
I was fortunate to study and learn from the best and I am so grateful to all of the people who have helped me in my lifetime, and I now want to give back by helping others to tell their story.

When you are telling a story that is close to you, a healing occurs. By getting the story out of you and onto paper, you are actually processing and dealing with what happened. Storytelling heals people because it’s cathartic. And when it heals you, it can also heal, help and have an impact on others. When told correctly, Intimate stories can have a profound impact on people and change the world.
