Introduction to Screenwriting
Katie offers a live screenwriting course at The Ridgefield Playhouse, Ridgefield CT. You will learn how to turn a story idea into a well-told, formatted screenplay that you can sell to Hollywood. In just 8 weeks (2-hours a week), you will learn the basics of screenwriting, storytelling, story structure, script format, theme, plot, characterization, and dialogue. Gain the tools and confidence to be able to write a screenplay from start to finish. Then, leave class with a fully developed story, a detailed outline, and for some, the first ACT of a screenplay (17-30 pages).
Do you have a great idea for a TV series? Is your life a TV series? Studios and Networks are always looking for the next “Game of Thrones,” “Breaking Bad,” “Scandal” or “Modern Family.” Katie offers an 8-week “TV Writing” Class that focuses on how to create, develop and write an original TV show.
You will spend 8 weeks learning how to flush out your TV show idea, create a series bible as well as write the pilot (1st) episode of the series. During the course, you will focus on how to develop a solid plot, structure the series so it has longevity, capture the theme of the show and create complex characters that audience’s will love and be compelled to follow.
Writer’s Workshop: What’s Your Story?
In this 6-week writing workshop, you will discover and start writing the story you are meant to tell. This course focuses on Katie’s unique method on how to find YOUR STORY within you. During the workshop you will learn the fundamentals of storytelling and how to write a story while dissecting your life and the experiences that have molded you into the person you are today. Ultimately, discovering a inherently specific story you are meant to tell and the message that goes along with that story. This class is for those who want to go deeper that just writing a book or screenplay or a short story. This workshop is about discovering the writer within you and story/ message you are meant to share with people.
Future Filmmaker’s Day Camp:
Learn the art of filmmaking at the Ridgefield Playhouse! All you need is a smart phone, an imagination and a desire to make movies! That’s right. This summer, Filmmaker, Katie Torpey, is running a fun, creative 2-week day camp teaching children and teens the fundamentals of independent filmmaking and the art of visually capturing a story on their smart phones. Campers will watch and analyze movies, receive hands-on instruction on storytelling, writing, directing and editing. Plus, they will learn how to use multiple camera lenses, fly a remote controlled camera drone, and use visual angles and lighting to help them creatively tell a story in their own artistic style. During the 2 weeks, each camper will make a music video and a 3-minute short film. Every camper will show one of their films on the big screen at the Ridgefield Playhouse on the last 2 days of camp with different awards being given out for originality, creativity, cinematography, story, etc. All campers will leave camp with the knowledge, skills and equipment to go off and make their own artistic films in the future. Limited enrollment!
